Canceled
Who approved this?
Approved by El Cerrito City Council.
The El Cerrito City Council voted 3 to 2 in May 2026 against renewing the Flock Safety contract, and the city's 40 license plate reader cameras went dark when the agreement ended on June 6, 2026. Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Saltzman and council members Lisa Motoyama and William Ktsanes voted against renewal; Mayor Gabe Quinto and council member Carolyn Wysinger voted for it. Police had asked for either a three year deal at 315,000 dollars or a one year deal at 105,000 dollars, and the council rejected both. An El Cerrito Police Department review released February 27, 2026 found that between June and August 2023 agencies outside California searched El Cerrito plate records, including the FBI, ATF, the GSA Inspector General and the National Park Service, with two later breaches by the United States Postal Inspection Service from September to November 2023 and by Loma Linda Healthcare Veterans Affairs Police in May 2025; the department said no federal immigration agency searched its records. Out of state sharing of this kind is barred by SB 34. Removal of the cameras started July 31, 2026 and was expected to finish by August 18, 2026. The one source giving a meeting date gives an internally inconsistent one, so no approval date is given.
