Who approved this?
No source names who approved this contract yet. The city clerk holds the approval file.
Surprise canceled its Flock Safety contract on August 17, 2026 and asked the company to remove all equipment. The city opened an investigation on August 12, 2026 after a review flagged a potential violation involving the automated license plate readers. An officer was placed on administrative leave less than a week later while the inquiry continued. The department had used the technology for more than two years and said it helped solve numerous crimes. City Councilmember Johnny Melton said Surprise could resume using the system when better safeguards are in place. Coverage placed the case alongside improper Flock access by officers in Chandler, Apache Junction and Goodyear. Neither source gives the contract amount, the camera count, the funding source, the term length or the date the council first approved the agreement.
